The date is Oct. 30, 2021. Five days ago, the Texas state legislature passed the House Bill 500, joining 9 other states in banning transgender athletes from participating on sports teams based on their gender identity. Earlier this fall, on September 1, 2021, the Texas Heartbeat Act was also put in place, banning abortions for pregnant women after 6 weeks and making no exceptions for rape or incest. These actions have had a devastating impact on women across the country, taking away their access to medical care and freedom of choice.
These acts, as well as many others, threaten to curb the progress that has been made by modern and past feminist movements, movements which helped to pave the way for advances in women’s rights over their body and in protecting gender expression. Delegates in this committee will be faced with the task of protecting this progress and preventing acts such as these from getting in the way of the goals and vision of the Modern Feminism Movement.
