Driven by centuries of animosity, sectarian-based conflict, and rogue paramilitaries, the Northern Ireland conflict– more commonly known as the Troubles– lasted three decades and would forever change the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the relationship between these two nations. What began as a series of civil rights protests eventually descended into years of violent riots, mass arrests, and deadly bombings. Republicans, who are predominantly Catholic, believe that Northern Ireland should be united with the Republic of Ireland, while loyalists, who are predominantly Protestant, want Northern Ireland to remain a part of the United Kingdom. As delegates representing members of the governments of the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom, it is your duty to address the “low-level” war consuming your nation and taking the lives of your civilians. Welcome to Unrest in Ulster: The Troubles.
